Genetic Variation: Mutations

Genetic Variation in organisms is caused by many things. One of these ways is through mutations. These mutations can be spontaneous, or they can be caused by the effects of mutagens on the organism. Mutations alter an organism's DNA to be slightly different than the rest of it's species, in turn causing genetic variation. There are three types of DNA mutations: Addition, deletion, and substitution (examples below)

I knew that mutations existed before Biology, but I didn't know how they came into existence or how they altered the DNA of an organism in various ways. I didn't even know that they had anything to do with DNA before this class. I am not sure if anyone in my family has a mutation in their DNA. I do know that many diseases can be caused by mutation.

  1. I like the way you structured this post. A lot of people get the types of mutations confused but this makes it very clear. One thing you could've done is make the text just a bit larger.

  2. I like the picture you included. You had helpful information about your topic as well. I now have a better understanding of what mutagens are.

  3. The description of the topic is pretty detailed, so it helps me understand. The included picture was helpful for me to further understand the different types of mutations. I like the reflection because I can relate to how he didn't know a lot about mutations until after reading the blog.
